Who is the First Indian to Travel to Space?
The Indian National Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is the space agency of the Government of India headquartered in the city of Bengaluru. Its vision is to “harness space technology for national development while pursuing space science research and planetary exploration.”
Formed in 1969, ISRO superseded the erstwhile Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRC) which was established in 1962 by the Government of India. ISRO launched India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975. It was named after the mathematician Aryabhata.
In 1980, Rohini became the first satellite to be placed in orbit by an Indian-made launch vehicle, SLV-3. ISRO has successfully launched more than 100 satellites, including India’s first Mars orbiter, Mangalyaan, making it the fourth space agency to reach Mars, as well as the first Asian nation to do so.
The first Indian to travel to space is Rakesh Sharma an astronaut from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He has also been honoured with the Hero of the Soviet Union title. Sharma was part of the STS-51-L mission, which was conducted by the United States space agency, NASA.
He is a former Indian Air Force pilot who flew on the Soyuz T-11 mission in 1984. He spent 7 days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes in space. He is a retired Air Force pilot and currently works as a commercial pilot.
Rakesh Sharma is one of the most famous astronauts in India. He was the first Indian to journey into space, and his stories of his time in space are truly inspiring. Sharma has said that his time in space was an amazing experience, and that he felt a great sense of accomplishment when he returned to Earth. He has also said that he is proud to be an Indian and to have been the first Indian in space.
